BESS ATWELL TIME COMES IN ROSES

Bess Atwell’s most recent release is a heartfelt folk tune that builds on the standard formula of acoustic singer-songwriters. ‘Time Comes In Roses’ is an atmospheric piece that pushes simplistic acoustic guitars against a thick wall of swelling strings, twinkling piano countermelodies and a heavenly lead vocal. Atwell describes the track as “a reflection on quite an ugly side of me,” homing in on the pandemic and how “when the weather started to shift into summer, I remember being struck by how defiantly the seasons ignored the disruption of the pandemic. It felt like summer hadn't been told it was now uninvited, and I found its arrival comforting and sad all at once.” Be sure to listen out for more similarly personal, interesting works from Bess Atwell this year. -Dan Peeke
